UNAM: from 10 minutes of manual roll call to 1 minute with Edusign's QR code

« I would recommend Edusign to other teachers, especially those with large groups like me with 80‑85 students. Attendance tracking has become much more agile. »

The challenge: 7 to 10 minutes of manual roll call for 80 students

Humberto Acevedo teaches project formulation and econometrics at UNAM's Faculty of Economics. Each semester, he faces groups of 80 to 85 students. Before Edusign, he managed all his tracking in an Excel file that combined the calendar, evaluations, exams, assignments and attendance.

Roll call was done out loud, name by name. For a group of 80 students, this took between 7 and 10 minutes at the start of every class, adding up to considerable lost time over a full semester. Humberto was looking for a way to make the process faster and more automatic.

Beyond lost time, manual roll call made it impossible to centralise absence justifications. Students had to hand in documents in person, which complicated tracking for both the lecturer and administrative staff.

« This semester I have 80 students and I was taking attendance manually. I was looking for a way to make it faster, more automatic. »

The solution: a QR code scanned in 1 minute and built-in absence justifications

Setting up the Edusign account was quick. In a few seconds, Humberto configured his student lists with the help of UNAM's administrative team. In-person attendance now works via a QR code displayed at the start of class: all 80 students scan from their phones in under a minute.

Absence justifications are also handled directly in Edusign. Students can upload a photo or screenshot of their medical certificate without interrupting the class or bothering the lecturer. Everything is centralised and accessible from the admin interface.

This transition also had an unexpected impact on engagement. Students, accustomed to using their phones, welcomed the system enthusiastically. They feel more involved in tracking their own attendance, which helps reduce absenteeism. Edusign lets lecturers view attendance statistics in real time, a valuable asset for those managing large groups.

« Creating the account is very easy and fast. It only takes a few seconds. The admin team helped me link my student lists. »

The results: technology serving teaching and an unreserved recommendation

For Humberto, Edusign's strongest point is its embrace of the new technological era. The QR code, the ability to receive a medical justification by photo directly in the app: these are elements that bring the classroom closer to students' digital habits. Integrating technology into the learning space drives real engagement.

The time savings are significant: from 7-10 minutes of manual roll call, Humberto went to under one minute with the QR scan. Over a full semester, that is hours entirely reclaimed for teaching. Absence records are accessible in one click, with no paperwork or manual follow-ups.

Humberto recommends Edusign without hesitation to his colleagues, especially those managing large groups. He has already shared the solution with other UNAM lecturers. Like Erick Correa, also a UNAM lecturer, and Universidad Linda Vista, higher education institutions in Mexico are adopting Edusign to modernise attendance management. « Edusign's strongest point is being immersed in the new technological era. The QR code, photo justifications... I love bringing these elements into my classroom and having students know we are doing everything to include more technology in the learning space. »
